Wednesday 16 September is not only St Cornelius & St Cyprian Day but also St Edith of Kemsing Day.
This year’s St Edith Pilgrimage to Kemsing on the PW takes place next Sunday 20 September.
Kemsing in Kent, the first village after Otford, is known for St Edith’s Well which is reminder that she was born there in about 963.
She was the daughter of King Edgar and is also known as St Edith of Wilton in Wiltshire as she spent adulthood at the Abbey.
On Sunday 20 September there will be groups walking from nearby Sevenoaks and along the PW from Otford, where the starting point is Holy Trinity Church near the river in the main street -not St Bartholomew’s by the pond.
Devotions at the Well in Kemsing are at 3.15pm followed by Vespers in the ancient parish church at 4pm.
The Bell pub is open all day.
This is the first St Edith’s Day since the death last November of banker and publisher Antony Tyler who lived in the village and organised the annual pilgrimage. Until recently the day ended with tea at his house. Now the pub is the focus for refreshment.
