London Day by Day is a collection of 20 pieces of work by artist Peta Bridle being shown in Southwark Cathedral’s cafe.
Peta Bridle is inspired by Geoffrey Fletcher (1923-2004) whose pen and ink sketches of London appeared in The Daily Telegraph Peterborough column during postwar years. He is best known for his book The London Nobody Knows which he turned into a film featuring James Mason.
Geoffrey often sat on the pavement to draw on site and Peta follows his example.
But her exhibition includes a high view from the cathedral tower of Borough Market and the winding railway lines.
The star picture is cathedral cat Hodge in colour.
Peta Bridle, like Geoffrey Fletcher, managed to record corners now changed or even lost but never photographed. An example is her sketch of Spur Yard off Borough High Street made before redevelopment began in 2015..
The Spur Inn was certainly known to pre-Reformation pilgrims in the 1520s. Its yard survives as the entrance to a Premier Inn where today’s pilgrims can spend their first night.
London Day by Day is at Southwark Cathedral Cafe until Wednesday 14 October: 9am-5pm; Sun 9.30am-4pm.
